When I was younger, I wrote all the time. In Grade 8, I wrote two stories that I loved (and still love the concept today), but my teacher thought they were very dark. One story was a take on the Prince and the Pauper trope, but mine had a time travel twist. If I recall correctly, the modern-day heroine was stuck in the past. She then obviously died far sooner than she should have because the Victorian era was not a walk in the park! The following story was about a woman desperately waiting for word about her husband who had been reported missing in action. She gave up hope right as her husband walked through the door.
These book endings reflected the kind of books I was reading. I was a very advanced reader for my age, almost since I started reading on my own, and my writing mirrored that, but I didn’t have a great output at the time. There weren’t any creative writing groups in my small town, even though we had an excellent library. The only people who liked my writings were my imaginary friends – who lasted a lot longer than maybe I should admit. Fun Fact: I wrote an award-winning, 45-minute, one-woman play about my imaginary friends, or “delusions,” as I called them.
Writing can be a lonely gig, but it doesn’t have to be a lonely craft! When authors come together, the collective energy is invigorating! We see we are not alone, and we benefit from insights other authors have.
